Gas Main work in
Town Hall Square 1927

A LARGELY unchanged Town Hall Square, dominated then as now by the Lane Memorial.
Workers from the then Bexhill Water and Gas Company were seen posing during the laying of a new gas main to serve the town centre in 1927.
Those were the days when gas mains were made of metal - not plastic. The foreground figure is seen laying on the ground for the benefit of the camera, supposedly welding a section of pipe.
Notable in this archive shot are the iron railings visible round the memorial to Colonel Henry Lane, first chairman of the new Bexhill Urban District Council in 1895.
