Little Common FC around 1935

Little Common FC 1938

DEREK Tidey, of Haslam Crescent, has been rooting through his nostalgia files yet again.
These are the Little Common Football Club members. Derek believes the photograph was taken in about 1938.
Team members names given on the reverse of the photo are: S. Heard, A. Carey, C. Keats, P. Hammond, G. Freeman, P. Deeprose, H. Catt, T. Carey, E. Hammond, Son Pilbeam and H. Viner.
AS the five year-old mascot pictured at the centre front, it is no wonder that Gordon Viner is keen to know more about the shot.
Gordon says: "LIttle Common Football Club - strip, blue and white stripes - probably Spring (end of season) 1934 or 1935.
"My father Harry Viner (pictured front, centre) is pictured with me between his knees. I would have been about five years old at the time."
Gordon says that pictured front right is Edder Hammond with his sons, Little Edder, in his lap.
"The only other name I know for sure (pictured behind the Hammonds) is Percy Deeprose - my wife Margaret's Uncle.
"Percy was killed at Dunkirk."
Gordon says of the picture: "This was Dad's last season. He would have been 40 at the time. He always played inside left and he said that 40 was far too old to play soccer.
"Edder Hammond was a bit lame, but he could hit a dead ball much harder than most players. He always took the free kicks."
Noting that there was evidently no trophy that season, Gordon appeals: "Can anyone fill in the remaining names?"

Robery Carey comments; "The photograph shows my father, Albert Carey, as the goalkeeper.
"You can imagine my surprise as I never knew he played for The Common. The things we find out when our loved ones pass on is sometimes very interesting."
