Down Secondary
School
Choir 1952

Trevor Goodsell got in touch about old Down Secondary School for Boys.
He writes: "My picture was taken a little later than the one published on April 21 containing a few additions.
"Like John Barden, I can remember most of the names, if not the faces.
"It was taken, as Rob Hicks mentioned, when the choir was very successful at the Hastings Musical Festival, taking both the cup and the shield for choirs.
"In addition to Sapphire And Silver, I can remember another song written by Mr Jolly (their music teacher) called Stranger In Paradise which we sang at concerts.
"We used to wear camphor blocks around our necks on a piece of string. Mr Jolly insisted that this helped keep the air-ways clear."
The choir photograph caught the eye of Robert Carey, of Eastwood Road.
Robert e-mails: "It was especially interesting to me as the one of the schoolboys contained my late brother, Charlie Carey, with pals of his from that era - Geoff Dawes and "Tubby" Bristow- so I look forward to seeing other names from readers.
"It would have been Bexhill Down County Secondary School for Boys ( now of course the High School) and the year about 1952-53."
