11th Bexhill Scout Group
LOGICAL deduction says this picture shows members of the 11th Bexhill Scout Group. But that's all the sender can offer. Sally Gander found the picture in her mother-in-law's album. But there was nothing written on the back to help fill the gaps. Sally's husband, Geoff, is pictured third from left in the middle row. But only the family would be able to identify him from this since only his eyes are showing!
From this, Sally deduces that the year would be about 1955 and the group something to do with the 11th Bexhill (All Saints') Scout Group, of which Geoff was a member.
They believe the gentleman on the right is the Scout Leader, Matt Shoesmith.
MUCH of the information Sally Gander sought about the Scout picture belonging to her mother-in-law has been supplied by Robert Carey.
"The picture shows the 11th Bexhill Scout troop (based at All Saints',
Sidley) at their summer camp at Frant Bottom (near Tunbridge Wells) in 1956 or 57.
"On this occasion the mums and dads and cubs paid their visit to the camp.
"I have the original in my album and unfortunately your photograph cuts off from the right hand side Matt Shoesmith, the scout leader. At the back is Father Wright, his assistant who we affectionately called Daddy Wright and I seem to know all the faces but not all the names.
"The scouts from the left are: ? , ? , Bill Morris, Adrian Eldridge,
me (the face below), Fenn, ?, Dodson, Ravenhhill, ? , "Minnie Masters, and "Inky" Saunders. I remember my Dad visiting me and I can recall so many of the parents faces, mostly Sidley folk. There is a lady, first row of the parents from the front, seated second in, I can recall being so kind and her husband but I cannot recall the name. I believe it was Bunkin or Bunn and I would really like to know if any readers can remember her.
"It was fun once you got over the first day's homesickness and living in the wilds for a week seemed like Bexhill was on the other side of the planet.
"I believe Matt Shoesmith is still around and I think Adrian's Dad is in the photograph - he used to do the First Aid badge with the Scouts.
"Seems like yesterday..."
FORMER Scoutmaster Matt Shoesmith has responded: "Crash, Bang, Wallop, what a picture, what a photograph."
Matt says: "Yes, that was the 11th Bexhill (All Saints') Scout Troop plus parents at the summer camp, mid-August 1957 at Frant Bottom near Tunbridge Wells.
"It was visitors' day. The lads were always pleased to see mums and dads for they would bring extra cakes and other goodies.
"I include a list of name of those I can remember of a great team of parents and Scouts."
Matt lists: Back row: Mr Evenden, Mr Dobson, Father Peter Wright, Group Scoutmaster, Assistant Curate at All Saints' Church.
Next row forward: - - ; Mr Stevens, Mrs Stevens, Mrs Ballard, - -, Mrs Dobson, Mr Lilley, Mrs Hunnisett, -- Mr Eldridge, --
Next row forward: Mrs Etherington, Mrs Bunkin, Mrs Evenden, (Cub Mistress), John (Minnie) Masters, - -, Adrian Eldridge, Peter Ballard, Nick Ballard, - -
Next row forward: Tony Evenden, Kenny Stevens, - - , George Bunkin, -- , John Wellington, Philip Day, - Dobson, Michael Reeves, - - , John Bray (his mum is just behind him).
Of those sitting in the front row, Matt can recognise the fifth Cub as Michael Kelly,.
He says: "My assistant Scoutmaster Dennis Etherington was the photographer. I am missing from the picture. I must have been brewing the tea!
"I hope that other readers are able to name a few more, if only to refresh my memories of many happy Scouting day in the eleven years I was Scoutmaster of the 11th Bexhill (All Saints') Scout Troop."
