A J Bowles timber yard 1954

This
working group showed friends at A. J. Bowles' yard.
George Stevens, now of Eastbourne, who submitted the shot, says he believes it was taken in about 1954.
His father, Tom Stevens, is pictured third from left.
Bowles' yard was once a prominent part of the townscape in the days when the old Bexhill West to Crowhurst branch railway had its own goods yard with associated businesses grouped about it.
The workmen were also correctly placed by a former colleague.
Rene Norman, of Ingrams Avenue, Sidley, recognised them as being from Bowles Timber Yard.
The yard stood in the former West Station goods yard, near the junction of London Road and Little Common Road.
Rene writes: "I believe Fred Bray is one of the men, and perhaps Tom Stevens.
"I worked at the timber yard for my wartime job.
"I was the first female to be there, then Doris Hodge (now deceased) and Evelyn Cheese (she is still around) came to work in the yard.
"The Observer photographer came to take my photograph as one of the 'women doing men's jobs'.
There were photos of post ladies and a lady in Sainsbury's.
"The photo of me was sitting on a pile of wood with (I believe) a Thermos flask."
Rene says she is now 82 and her memory is not what it was but the photo reminded of the site of the present fire station in Beeching Road - so proving that her memory is more accurate than she imagined!
